Andrea Boccalini
He began his career with reportage, working on various projects in Guatemala, on child labour and movements against the exploitation of mineral resources. The most striking shots have resulted in an exhibition for the UN dedicated to young people and are part of the publication “Conflictos mineros y pueblos indigenas en Guatemala” by Joris Van De Sandt. After that, a strong passion born for stage photography and jazz music portraiture. In theatre, in addition to following independent productions, he has worked with many internationally renowned directors such as Vincenzo Schino and Peter Stein. When he lived in New York, he came into contact with the most excellent jazz musicians in the world. His shots have been the subject of exhibitions and workshops. The success helped him to open collaborations with national and international magazines such as the New York Times, the New York Post, Republic, Jazztimes, Downbeat, Rolling Stones and Jazz Music. Voted the best Italian jazz photographer for five years with the Readers Poll Jazzit Award, he has so far taken pictures of almost 200 records of the most important international artists. He moved to Vienna for three years and came into contact with electronic music, portraying Motsa, The Functionist and Andrea Fissore among many others. He was the first Italian Leica ambassador. Six years ago, he started to follow with his Leica stories on the fringes, bringing back the dignity of the people who live in both urban and social peripheral contexts. These projects were the subject of exhibitions and publications such as the one on Terni and Corviale. This last work was shown to the general public at the Photolux Festival, one of the most important international photography festivals. Because of his aptitude for storytelling through portraiture, he was chosen in 2019 by the MAXXI Foundation for the Welcome project - bringing art into schools. Also active as a photographer for advertising campaigns and corporate projects, he has among his clients Pirelli, Huawei, Galbani France, Ducati and Lavazza and he is the scientific consultant for the Sky Arte "Master of Photography" program.
